About Runic Alphabet Converter

Convert English to Elder Futhark runes — the oldest form of runic writing used by Germanic peoples ~150-800 AD. This is approximate Latin-letter-to-rune mapping, suitable for decorative and fantasy use. For phonologically accurate Norse rune writing, transliterate through Old Norse first (try our Norse Translator), then convert. Each rune is a real Unicode character (block U+16A0).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabet, used by Germanic peoples from ~150-800 AD. It has 24 runes, each carved into stone, wood, or metal. It predates the Younger Futhark used by Vikings during the Viking Age (~800-1100 AD).

It's approximate Latin-to-rune mapping. True runic writing follows different phonemic rules than modern English — for example, runes encode sounds, not letters, so 'th' should ideally use the ᚦ rune (thurisaz), not 't' + 'h'. Our converter does a simple letter-by-letter mapping for ease of use.

A scholar of runes will recognize the individual runes but the word-as-spelled may look odd because English phonology differs from Old Norse. For authentic Norse-style runes, use the Old Norse Translator first, then this converter.

All 26 lowercase letters map to Elder Futhark runes. Capital letters get their lowercase rune. Numbers, punctuation, and spaces pass through unchanged.
